Surrogate Mother

Surrogacy has gained popularity over recent years as a viable way for a childless couple, or a couple who for medical reasons can't have children on their own, become parents. Some women, who have a strong desire to help these childless couples, volunteer their time and their bodies by becoming a surrogate mother.

A surrogate mother is a woman who becomes pregnant and carries a child in her womb with the sole intent of relinquishing all rights to the child to the waiting parents when the child is born. Many childless couples regard surrogate mothers as selfless and amazing miracles in their quest to become parents.

Not every woman who wants to be a surrogate mother can be one. The laws are very strict regarding surrogacy to protect both the couple hoping to become parents and the surrogate mother. As such, a woman who is considering becoming a surrogate mother must not only go through a physical evaluation to make sure she is healthy enough to carry a child to term without injury to the baby or to her own body, but she must go through a psychological evaluation to make sure she has made the decision to be a surrogate mother for the right reasons.

Many surrogate mothers make the decision to carry a child for a childless couple because of strong desire to help these couples realize their dream of becoming parents. Most surrogate mothers are already mothers to their own children and know what is involved in carrying a child, giving birth and raising a child. They want to be able to give this special bond between parent and child to someone who would not be able to become a parent otherwise.

While surrogate mothers are paid for their time and the inconvenience of becoming pregnant and delivering a baby, many surrogate mothers do not consider it a hardship. And while the money they receive is a bonus for them, it is not the ultimate reason they choose to be a surrogate mother.

Surrogate mothers are unique and special women. Some surrogate mothers find the experience so rewarding that they continue to be surrogates for more than one pregnancy and many times for the same couple they worked with originally.

While surrogate mothers know that the child they are carrying is not their child, but the child of the couple they entered into the surrogate contract with, many times lifelong bonds between surrogate mothers and the couple they worked with are formed.

Becoming a surrogate mother is not for everyone. But for those who successfully complete the program, the experience is rewarding and one that gives them great satisfaction.
